My Dog Wouldn't Walk Past the Skate Park Until We Sat and Watched the Boards

The skate park was his wall. Not the road, not the traffic, the park, the boards, the clatter of wheels on concrete and the kids who moved like nothing he had been built to read. He planted at the gate, pulled back, and the walk ended there, every time, at the place that should have been the easy part of the day out with him.

I had been dragging him past, which is the owner's reflex and the dog's nightmare, because the pull told him the park was danger enough to fight, and the fight fed the fear, and the fear grew a root at the gate he could not step over. We were stuck, him shaking, me red, the kids watching, and the walk was a war we both lost by the gate where he planted.

The change was to sit, not move. I took him to the gate, sat on the low wall, and watched the boards with him, no pull, no push, just a person and a dog and a thing that clattered. He leaned, then looked, then watched, because a sitting owner is a safe owner, and the safe owner made the park a place to be, not a thing to flee from in panic.

We fed the calm. A treat for the look, a treat for the stay, a calm voice for the clatter, and the gate became the spot we chose instead of the wall he feared. The kids, baffled at first, started waving, and the dog learned the wave meant the good thing, and the park filled with faces instead of threats, which is the world he needed to see there with me.

We closed the distance over days, never fast. Sit at the gate, sit inside the gate, sit by the rail, walk the edge while the boards clattered, and the fear shrank because the fear needed his full flight and I had given him a reason to stay. He watched the skaters the way he watches birds, with interest instead of terror, and the wall came down a sit at a time with him.

Now we walk through, sometimes sit, sometimes pass, and the dog checks me at the gate the way he checks at every threshold, because the sit taught him the park was mine to share, not his to flee. The clatter is just a sound he has filed under safe, and the kids are friends he has not met, which is the calm every fearful dog is built to learn given a patient owner who sits with him.

The clatter is just a sound he filed under safe, and the kids are friends he has not met, which is the calm every fearful dog is built to learn given a sitting owner and a treat. The gate that was a wall is now just a gate, and we walk through it like it was always ours, the boards clattering, the dog watching, the war over at the low wall where we first sat and let him look at the park.

If your dog freezes at a place, sit at the edge before you pull at the middle, because the watching is the teaching and the teaching is the calm. Mine learned the skate park from a low wall and a treat, and the wall came down one sit at a time, which is the only way a fear ever falls, slowly, with the dog choosing to stay and watch the boards instead of running from the noise he could not read at all.

The clatter is a sound he filed under safe, and the kids are friends he has not met yet, which is the calm every fearful dog is built to learn from a sitting owner.

If your dog freezes at a place, sit at the edge before you pull at the middle, because the watching is the teaching and the teaching is the calm he needs from you. Mine learned the skate park from a low wall and a treat, and the wall came down one sit at a time, which is the only way a fear ever falls, slowly, with the dog choosing to stay and watch the boards instead of running from the noise he could not read or understand at all.

The gate that was a wall is a gate he walks through now, the boards clattering, the dog watching instead of shaking, and the war is over at the low wall where we first sat. The watching was the teaching and the teaching was the calm, and the skate park is just a place we pass, which is the quiet end every fearful dog earns when his owner sits with him instead of pulling him through the middle of the noise he could not read at all.
