Giardia turned a clean puppy into a messy, gassy mystery. My spaniel pup, Wren, was bright and hungry and looked healthy, then her stools went soft, then worse, then awful. The vet's test came back with a word I had heard but never feared: giardia. That changed in a day.

It is a tiny parasite, not a worm, that lives in the gut and spreads through water and dirt fouled by sick animals. Puppies pick it up from puddles, from shared runs, from the ground at the park where a hundred dogs have been. Wren had drunk from a stream on a walk, the kind I used to think was charming. It was charming until it wasn't. The parasite grabbed hold because her young gut had no defence yet.

The signs were not dramatic at first. A little softness, a little gas, a pup who seemed fine but left a mess that smelled wrong. I almost waited it out. That would have been the mistake. Giardia does not clear on its own in a young dog, and the longer it runs the more it irritates the bowel and the thinner the pup gets. Baths mattered too. Cysts cling around the back end, and a dog who licks herself redeposits them. A warm wash of the hind area, gently, broke the cycle. Not a full groom, just the part that mattered, done with care so she did not learn to fear it. Wren tolerated it because I made it quick and followed with a treat she only got for bath time.
