Crickets, Grubs and the Quiet Rise of Insect Protein in Pet Bowls

Producing a kilogram of protein from black soldier fly larvae uses a fraction of the land and water that the same kilogram of beef protein demands, and the larvae can be raised on food waste that would otherwise rot in landfill. That single set of numbers explains why insect protein has gone from novelty to serious category in pet food inside about a decade.

The insects in question are a small group. Black soldier fly larvae dominate, because they grow fast, tolerate crowding, convert organic waste efficiently and can be dried and defatted into a stable meal. House crickets and mealworms appear too, usually in treats or in smaller-volume premium lines. Farmed indoors in stacked trays, harvested in weeks rather than months, they need no grazing land, produce very little methane and use so little water compared with livestock that the comparison stops being interesting and starts being lopsided.

Whether that matters to you depends on how you feel about the fact that pet food consumes a meaningful share of global animal protein production. Companion animals in wealthy countries eat a lot of meat. For owners who want to reduce that footprint without feeding an obligate carnivore a plant-based diet, insects sit in an interesting middle position: they are animal protein, complete with the amino acids that come with animal tissue, produced at a fraction of the environmental cost.

Does it actually feed a dog or cat properly?

Broadly, yes, with caveats. Black soldier fly larvae meal typically runs high in protein with a respectable amino acid profile, and digestibility in published feeding trials has generally been good, comparable to conventional animal meals rather than obviously inferior. The larvae are also naturally rich in lauric acid, a medium-chain fat, and they carry calcium at levels that are unusual for an animal protein source, which formulators have to account for rather than treat as a bonus.

Cats need closer attention. Taurine is the obvious question, since cats cannot synthesise enough of it and a deficiency causes retinal degeneration and dilated cardiomyopathy. Insect meals are not reliably rich in taurine, and processing reduces what is there, so any insect-based cat food must have taurine supplemented to meet AAFCO or FEDIAF requirements. That is entirely achievable and manufacturers do it, but it is a reason to check that a product carries a proper complete-and-balanced statement for your cat's life stage rather than assuming an insect diet is nutritionally self-sufficient. Chitin, the material of the insect exoskeleton, is another wrinkle; it behaves somewhat like fibre, is only partly digestible, and in excess will pull overall digestibility down.

The allergy angle is the strongest argument

Here is where insect protein earns its place for reasons that have nothing to do with the planet. Diagnosing a food allergy properly requires an elimination trial: eight to twelve weeks on a protein the animal has demonstrably never eaten, with nothing else passing its lips. That has become harder every year, because chicken, beef, lamb, fish, duck, venison and rabbit now turn up across mainstream and boutique ranges alike. Owners of itchy dogs arrive at the vet having already worked through half the novel proteins on the market.

Almost no dog or cat has previously eaten black soldier fly larvae. That makes insect protein a genuinely novel antigen for practically every patient, and it gives dermatologists a clean option for elimination trials that hydrolysed diets do not always match on palatability. Several European veterinary diets now use it precisely for this. It is worth saying plainly that an elimination trial only means something if it is done properly and supervised by your vet, with no treats, no flavoured medications and no scavenging, and that self-diagnosing a food allergy at home is how most trials fail.

What it is like in real life

Palatability is better than most people brace for. Dogs, in the main, eat it without comment, and some manufacturers report acceptance rates that match conventional recipes. Cats are cats, and acceptance is more variable, though the same gradual approach that works for any diet change applies here.

Cost is the real friction. Insect farming is still scaling up, and insect-based foods generally sit at premium price points, above supermarket ranges and often above mid-tier conventional brands. That gap should narrow as production volumes rise, but it is a genuine consideration today.

Regulation is where the geography shows. The European Union has moved considerably faster, with several insect species authorised as processed animal protein for pet food and a growing shelf presence in the UK, Netherlands, Germany and France. In the United States, approval works through AAFCO ingredient definitions, and progress has been slower and species-by-species, with black soldier fly larvae for adult dog food arriving before broader permissions. If you cannot find these products locally, that is usually a regulatory story rather than a quality one.

An honest closing note: the research base is young. We have solid short-term digestibility and palatability data, and reasonable feeding trial evidence. We do not yet have decades of large-population, long-term outcome data of the kind that exists for conventional formulations, and anyone claiming insect diets are proven superior for health is going beyond the evidence. What we can say is that a properly formulated insect-protein food from a manufacturer with veterinary nutritionists on staff, meeting AAFCO or FEDIAF standards and backed by feeding trials, looks like a reasonable choice rather than a gamble. Talk to your vet before switching a pet with existing health conditions, and treat anything sold on sustainability claims alone with the same scepticism you would apply to any other marketing.
