I installed a simple shelf on our kitchen windowsill and watched my cat discover joy in its simplest form. Birds. Leaves. Rain. She spent hours there, tail twitching, eyes tracking, occasionally chirping at passing insects. The shelf cost nothing but a board and brackets. The entertainment value exceeded anything I'd bought at the pet store.

Safety comes first. Window screens must be secure — cats push against screens with surprising force, and failure means disaster. Install screens that lock into frames, not just press-fit models. For older cats or kittens, consider temporary barriers that prevent access to open windows while preserving the view.

The shelf itself should be wide enough for comfortable positioning. Six inches minimum. Eight is better. A narrow perch becomes a balancing act rather than a resting place. Add cushions for comfort, but remove them regularly — cats prefer the firm surface, and cushions collect fur and claws.

Multiple perches beat one large platform. Cats like options — a high spot for observation, a lower spot for napping, a spot near warmth sources. Two or three positions within view of each other satisfy most cats' needs for surveillance and security.

Seasonal adjustments matter. Summer sun creates hot surfaces. Winter drafts cool perches quickly. A simple moveable mat lets you adjust for temperature. In summer, position perches where indirect light prevails. In winter, choose spots that catch afternoon warmth.

The cost-benefit analysis is remarkable. A few dollars in materials. Hours of cat contentment. No batteries, no plugs, no complex assembly. Just a view and a place to watch it.
