Temperament

Goldens are famously gentle and tolerant, which is why they are a top choice for homes with children. They are sociable to a fault and tend to greet strangers like long-lost friends. Size and Lifespan

Adult males typically stand 23–24 inches at the shoulder and weigh 65–75 pounds, while females are slightly smaller at 21.5–22.5 inches and 55–65 pounds. With proper care, a Golden Retriever lives an average of 10–12 years.

Coat and Grooming

Their dense, water-repellent double coat comes in shades of gold from light cream to deep reddish. Goldens shed year-round and blow their coat seasonally, so brushing two to three times a week keeps loose hair under control. Baths every few weeks, regular nail trims, and ear cleaning prevent common issues.

Exercise and Training

These are high-energy dogs that need at least an hour of exercise daily. Fetch, swimming, and brisk walks keep both body and mind engaged. Goldens respond beautifully to positive reinforcement; harsh correction damages their trusting nature. Basic obedience, followed by advanced tricks or dog sports, makes for a happy, well-adjusted companion.

Health Considerations

Responsible breeders screen for hip and elbow dysplasia, heart conditions, and certain cancers that affect the breed. Obesity is a manageable but serious risk, so portion control and regular activity matter. Routine veterinary checkups, vaccinations, and parasite prevention form the backbone of a long, healthy life.
